Aliveasart Explores Animation and Stop Motion Film
This might not be the best thing for a visual and performing arts enthusiast like myself to admit, but I am really not a huge fan of watching the Oscars. There are just too many awards bestowed upon the film community in one sitting, and very little time is spent actually celebrating accomplishments. One of my favorite awards given at the Oscars is the one for short films and animation. It happens to be one of the awards that gets very little attention, and if you ask me, that is a true shame.
Short films, especially animated ones, take loads of time to scope and produce. I think they deserve far more than just five minutes of fame at the Oscars. Since part of Aliveasart’s mission is to promote the lesser known players in the arts world, I am starting a series of posts that will focus solely on these types of films. To start out the series, I have chosen to highlight five of my favorite stop motion and animated videos. Please enjoy them, and come back for more!
Autumn Story
By Lucinda Schreiber
This is a fantastic short film that features animated chalkboard drawings. It took six long months to create, and from what I have seen, it is a truly original concept. The images were drawn onto chalkboards frame by frame, then shot with a stills camera and edited together in FCP. In case you are wondering the name of the beautiful song in the background, it is ‘Autumn Story’ by the Firekites.
Oneironaut
By Erica Kobren
In some ways, the premise of this short film reminded me of the music video by Oren Lavie that I showcased a few months ago. It is a project done by Erica Kobren, a senior at the School of Visual Arts in New York City. This is such phenomenal work from a very young new artist! I can’t imagine what colorful treats she will dream up for us next.
Just Like
By Emil Goodman
Erica Kobren isn’t the only young artist with major talent. Check out this striking mixed media silhouette piece produced for Hungarian music group Beat Dis. It has got to be one of the best music videos that I have seen thus far. The animation is done by 24 year old Emil Goodman. He is pretty fantastic, don’t you think? If you love the concept and execution of this film as much as I do and want to see more goodies like it, head over to Emil’s YouTube page.
This is Where We Live
By 4th Estate
Fifthestate is a collective blog founded by the editors and authors at PressBooks. It is a place where writers go to post opinions and debate, and where readers can talk back on all issues that interest them. For its 25th anniversary blog post, the collective commissioned Apt and Asylum Films to produce this spectacular short film. If you are even a 10th as nerdy as I am, you will just l o v e the artistry of this book village backdrop!
Animals
By Ljudbilden
This one will put a smile on your face, guaranteed. It is a quirky video that was created for the experimental music group Minologue. Kristofer Ström, also known as Ljudbilden, is the mastermind behind the piece. He is also a musician himself, and an occasional illustrator.
