1. 100 Extraordinary Examples of Paper Art
(via @designerdepot)
Although paper art can be traced back to nearly a thousand years ago, it is a slowly expanding area of design that rarely gets much attention. In this great article from Desnigner Depot, you’ll see 13 artists who make some seriously cool creations from paper. With materials that range from A4 printing paper to actual books, these impressive pieces of art will blow you away.
2. Obama – One People
(via @JoaoMendonca)
You don’t have to be an American to know that the election of Barack Obama was a historic one. According to official estimates, 1.8 million people gathered on the National Mall in the District of Columbia for inauguration day, and even more patriots were glued to their television sets, eager to witness the unprecedented event. For Obama’s 100th day in office, the MIT SENSEable City Lab created visualizations of mobile phone call activity amongst the inaugural crowd. The videos are not only cool to watch, but they are also quite informative:
The areas around the Mall and Pennsylvania Avenue, where most inaugural activities took place, are highlighted on the map with 3-D building models colored in yellow. In the center of the screen, the map of Washington, D.C. is overlaid with a 3-D color-coded animated surface of square tiles (1 tile represents an area of 150 x 150 meters). Each tile rises and turns red as call activity increases and likewise drops and turns yellow as activity decreases. On the left, a bar chart breaks down the call activity by showing the normalized contributions of calls from the 50 states and 138 foreign countries grouped by continent. The timeline at the bottom illustrates the overall trend of call activity in the city during the week of the Presidential Inauguration.
3. New Yorker Cover featuring iPhone Painting
(via @laughingsquid)
This year, artist Jorge Colombo created the June cover of The New Yorker entirely on his iPhone. I don’t know about you, but it kind of makes me want to run out and get an iPhone, too. This piece, which was done using the Brushes application, took just one hour to complete. Not too bad – not too bad at all!
4. Western Spaghetti by PES
(via @foodtvdotca)
Craving a little silliness in your life? Here’s a recipe for Western Spaghetti that just might do the trick. I tried it the other day, myself, and loved it. Go ahead – dig in!
5. Off the Wall: Astonishing 3D Murals
(via @KimSherrell)
If anything makes me want to travel the world, it’s street art. Yep! I have a semi love affair with graffiti, and it’s not going to end anytime soon. This week I discovered some truly incredible 3-dimensional murals via one of @KimSherrell’s notorious tweets. They are nothing like the street art we have showcased before on Aliveasart. Check them out – you won’t be disappointed!
