Top 5 Twitter Discoveries – Week of June 1

7 June 2009 No Comment

It’s our favorite time of the week –  time to reveal our top five Twitter discoveries! Grab your mouse, click away, and enjoy this edition of inspirational links. Some are interactive, others will make you laugh – the rest, well, they will just make you feel warm and fuzzy all over. Don’t forget that you, too, can appear in our Top 5 Twitter Discoveries of the Week by simply following us and tweeting your favorite finds. And now you can also connect with us on Facebook. Do it – we’ll return the favor!

1. Paint Your Own Song
(via JasonAbbruzzese)

I must confess – this discovery isn’t entirely Twitter related. A childhood friend of mine sent me the link directly through Facebook, but I just couldn’t resist sharing it in this post. This is an interactive music video for Soy tu Aire (I am Your Air), a serene and uplifting song by the group Labuat. It is especially entertaining if you understand Spanish, but even if you aren’t bilingual, it’s tons of fun to paint your own song!

2. Ricardo Gimenes
(via @behindcadi)

This one is a little goofy. It is a new project by Ricardo Gimenes that depicts society’s thoughts on newly popular websites. Every week, Gimenes posts a comic similar to the one shown below. Visit the site, and join in on the fun. And be sure to check out the rest of Gimenes’s whimsical art portfolio at ricardogimenes.com.

3. Little Red Riding Hood Animation
(via @dotartdude)

How come I never got a cool school project like this one? No fair. The assignment was to reinterpret the fairy tale Little Red Ridning Hood. If you ask me, Tomas Nilsson did a damn good job! In case you are wondering, the soundtrack for this animation is by Slagsmålsklubben, and the original idea for the short film was inspired by the music video for Remind Me by Röyksopp (also shown below).

4. Kickstarter
(via @picocool)

Do you believe that a good idea, communicated well, can spread quickly? So do the people at Kickstarter. Kickstarter is a new venture that helps creative people raise money for their projects, by connecting them directly to fans who receive exclusive access and rewards in exchange for their patronage. Unlike TrustArt, Kickstarter is not an investment mechanism. Project creators retain 100% ownership of their funds. Here’s more on how it works:

Project creators can offer products, services or other benefits to inspire people to support their project: A hot-air balloon ride to the first person to pledge $300, an invitation to the BBQ for anyone who pledges more than $5, exclusive daily video updates for anyone who pledges more than $1. It’s up to each project creator to sculpt their own offers and there’s lots of cool ways to do it. (Want to see a great example? Google “Josh Freese”)

People who pledge also receive access to all project updates (posts, video, pics, etc.). “Project Updates” is our fancy name for the project blog. Some project creators may post 10 updates a day, others may rarely post. Some may make all their posts publicly viewable, others may set all their posts as exclusive to their backers.

5. Chewing Gum Sculpture
 (via @designyoutrust)

Got an appetite? You might not anymore after this one. Check out this sculpture made entirely from chewing gum! It is the work of Maurizio Savini, an Italian artist represented by the Pastificio Cerere Foundation. Chewing gum sculpting has got to be a tough craft to master. I can’t decide what is more freaky – this, or the pigeon feather sculptures that we showcased last month.
