Dark Zoo (Nicolas Evariste)

It has been a while since an artist has left me speechless, but Nicolas Evariste has done just that. Based in Normandy, France, this 23-year-old has mastered the art of animal imagery like no other photographer I have seen thus far. I discovered Evariste this morning, and haven’t been able to close my browser since. There is just an air of mystery to each of his images, the kind that leaves one wondering how he could have possibly captured it. Check out these photographs from one of Evariste’s latest collections, Dark Zoo. They are both literally and figuratively “out of this world.”

What impresses me most about Evariste is the ease with which he blurs the line between photography and hand drawing. Each of his photographs looks as if it just as easily could have been painted on a canvas – and that’s not an easy effect to accomplish. Trust me. If this type of monochromatic mystery piques your interest, I highly recommend a look at Evariste’s full portfolio. He does some incredible work with nature and cityscapes – enough to prove to us that life is art.
