Top 5 Twitter Discoveries – Week of October 5th

11 October 2009 No Comment

….And we’re back! Our move back to New York City was a bit more chaotic than expected, but we are finally settled in and excited to bring you more artsy diversions. The Top 5 Twitter Discoveries series has been on hiatus for a while, so we thought we’d make this an extra special post to make up for it.  Instead of the usual five links, we’ve decided to share ten this time. What are you waiting for, get to clicking, and enjoy!

Note: Don’t forget that you, too, can appear in our Top 5 Twitter Discoveries of the Week by simply following us and tweeting your favorite finds. And now you can also connect with us on Facebook!

1. Dirty Car Art - (via @DesignApplause)

Artist Scott Wade has discovered a new art medium that is super cheap and seriously cool. Dirty car art has got to be one of the most creative movements I have seen in a while. The next time I come across a dirty Infiniti, oh, it’s on!

2. Typolution Short Film - (via @Minervity)

Showcasing typography is one thing. Depicting human evolution through typography is another. Olivier Beaudoin is the genius behind the short film below.  This piece is so inspiring – it’s a must see!

3. Missed Connections – (via @drawn)

This one speaks for itself, and if you live in NYC it is doubly entertaining. Sophie Blackall gets her art inspiration from Craigslist. Smart move, if you ask me. There is lots to work with on that site, and the treasure below is a pretty good example. To see more works like this one, head over to Sophies blog:

Every day hundreds of strangers reach out to other strangers on the strength of a glance, a smile or a blue hat. Their messages have the lifespan of a butterfly. I’m trying to pin a few of them down.

4. MailMeArt – (via @michaelnobbs)

Whoever said that handwritten letters were outdated? Here’s a fresh new twist to snail mail. Mail Me Art is a new global project for which designers turn their used envelopes into artwork. Submissions will be aggregated in a book and an exhibit this April 2010.

5. New York Times Commercial – (via @ministryoftype)

If you liked the typography video above, be sure to check this one out also. It is pretty unbelievable how much one can do with words. This New York Times commercial delivers that message loud and clear.

6. Stunning Architectural Visualizations - (via @designerdepot)

Since many of us can’t buy our own new homes during this recession, we might as well keep tabs on what other folks are doing with theirs, right? Here’s a fantastic collection of architectural visualizations, both real and imaginary.

7. 100 Works from Africa and the Midlle East - (via @smashingmag)

Other than our post on Poras Chaudhary, we haven’t spend much time showcasing Middle Eastern and African artists. Well, that ends now. Please click through this entry to see some spectacular pieces from across the pond. There is some serious talent out there  - serious!

8. 22 of the Coolest Sculptures You’ll Ever See - (via @designyoutrust)

I stand by my statement that Kate MccWire’s pigeon feather sculptures are some of the best I have ever seen, but these structures are equally incredible. See for yourself. No further explanation needed.

9. Seriously Cool Watercolor Paintings - (via @abduzeedo)

What’s the plural of moose? Meese? Who knows, but while you’re trying to figure it out, take a look at this striking watercolor collection featured on Abduzeedo. The artist’s name is Lora. You can browse through the rest of her portfolio at DeviantART and her personal website. She has a very unusual style!

10. 6 Incredible Twitter Powered Art Projects - (via @tomatoteam)

If you are a Twitter user and/or an art fanatic, well, this one’s just for you. Join one of these Twitter-powered art projects, and help us spread the word of art throughout the Twittersphere. The project pictured below is called Twyric. By mashing up Twitter with Flickr, it brings life to short, Twitter-published poems. It’s so much fun – try it!
