Puppet Master Masterpieces (Marty Allen)

They say the best things come around when you least expect them to.  Well, let me tell you.  They’re right – whoever they are.  This (cliché) maxim has rung true for me on many life occasions, the most recent of which entailed a run-in with famed sock puppet extraordinaire Marty Allen.
I stumbled upon Allen’s work a few weeks ago, during a casual stroll to a World Cup final viewing party in Union Square.  Contrary to most Sunday afternoons, I was neither armed with a 5-pound camera pack bouncing off the …

Big Words for a Vandal (Roadsworth)

Big words for a vandal.  That’s what I think, at least.  Urban prankster Peter Gibson, also known as “Roadsworth,” takes the relationship between philosophy and art to a whole new level.  Often coined as Canada’s answer to Banksy, this established activist has been causing visually appealing mischief since 2001.

Initially motivated by a desire for more bike paths in Montreal, Roadsworth developed a language around street markings and other elements of the urban landscape with an original stencil-based technique. In the fall of 2004, Roadsworth was arrested for his nocturnal activities, …

Inside Out There (Alberto Seveso)

A few weeks ago I discovered this surreal 10th anniversary music video for independent French label Record Makers.  I found the piece oddly inspiring – let’s just say it got my wheels spinning in all kinds of ways.

One of my favorite aspects of the video was the theme of transformation from the inside out.  It’s a message that is simple and pallatable. But, oddly, it’s not one we often find so literally translated in art or in music. That’s why I was pleased to discover Alberto Seveso  this morning.

Based in Rome, Seveso specializes in photography and digital illustration. His work is highly original, and, interestingly, …

Finding Love in New York City (Michaela Dalzell)

No one said love comes easily – especially in New York City. Photographer Michaela Dalzell learned that the hard way. She moved to New York City to get a Masters in Digital Photography at the School of Visual Arts, with hopes of eventually becoming a commercial photographer. Thankfully, Dalzell’s desire to understand the people of her new home took her in a different direction.

“I came here searching for my career. I kind of thought all New Yorkers were here, and they were just working. I didn’t think it was possible …

Dark Zoo (Nicolas Evariste)

It has been a while since an artist has left me speechless, but Nicolas Evariste has done just that. Based in Normandy, France, this 23-year-old has mastered the art of animal imagery like no other photographer I have seen thus far. I discovered Evariste this morning, and haven’t been able to close my browser since. There is just an air of mystery to each of his images, the kind that leaves one wondering how he could have possibly captured it. Check out these photographs from one of Evariste’s latest collections, Dark Zoo. They …
